Timothy S. O’Toole was most recently Chief Executive Officer of VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. A visionary leader, Tim directed the development and implementation of VITAS’ mission of providing high-quality and compassionate end-of-life care to patients and families. Tim also served as Executive Vice President of Chemed Corporation, of which VITAS is a subsidiary. Tim retired from this role in 2015. During his career, Tim led VITAS through unprecedented growth, including everything from increasing the number of patients the company serves to expand the company’s geographic reach. Under his direction, the company made significant achievements, including acquiring respected hospice providers; obtaining certificates of need in Washington, DC, and Florida; expanding operations to additional states; launching the company’s first consumer-directed advertising campaigns designed to increase awareness of hospice, particularly in traditionally underserved communities; developing specialized programs for veterans; implementing innovative employment recruitment and retention campaigns; and forging strategic partnerships with national health insurance companies and a wide variety of healthcare leaders, all in an effort to increase opportunities to deliver end-of-life care to more patients and families nationwide.

Named to his former position at VITAS when Chemed acquired the company in February 2004, Tim had served since 1991 as Chemed’s representative on the VITAS Board of Directors. During his tenure on the VITAS Board, the company expanded significantly by growing its hospice programs and making strategic acquisitions. After joining Chemed as vice president and treasurer, Tim was promoted in 1992 to executive vice president of Chemed while retaining his title of treasurer. In 1995, he gained additional responsibility as chairman and chief executive officer of Patient Care, Inc., a home health services subsidiary that Chemed acquired in 1994 and divested in 2002.

Under Tim’s leadership, Patient Care grew, through steady expansion and acquisitions, from a regional home health company to a $140-million provider with operations in the Northwest, South and Midwest. Prior to joining Chemed, Tim’s work includes serving for eight years as a director of Omnicare, Inc. (NYSE: OCR), the nation’s leading provider of professional pharmacy and related consulting services for long-term care facilities. Tim served on the national ALS Association Board of Trustees and the University of Miami, School of Business Administration Health Sector Management and Policy Advisory Board. Tim recently joined the Board of Agilix Health a Boston based start-up focused on remote patient monitoring. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky and a law degree from the Salmon P. Chase Law School of Northern Kentucky University.
