Medicare Annual Enrollment opens today, October 15, 2026, and runs through December 7. CMS reports that the average monthly Medicare Advantage plan premium falls from $4.47 in 2026 to $2.81 in 2027.
Premium is the most visible number on Medicare Plan Finder and the easiest one for a plan to subsidize. A plan that buys the headline with a lower premium has to recover the difference somewhere, whether through benefit design, network configuration, utilization management, or supplemental benefits that get quietly narrowed.
For companies selling into plans, that trade is the opportunity. A plan competing on a premium it is partly absorbing needs utilization to behave. Anything that credibly reduces avoidable cost is easier to fund in a year like this one than in a year when plans are pricing comfortably.
The same logic runs in the opposite direction on member experience. A plan that wins on price and then loses on service has a retention problem arriving in roughly fourteen months, visible first in survey results and subsequently in a Star Rating.
Cheap to join and expensive to keep is a legitimate strategy. It is simply one that generates a specific and predictable set of buying needs about a year after the enrollment it wins.
